Hiring a brand photographer or doing the shoot yourself? Pros & cons

Everyone wants nice fancy photos for their website or social media, but all of that takes time, time you could be moving the actual needle in your business. But you have to ask yourself, if I’m posting faceless content just like everyone else, how am I going to stick out? All of your competitors are posting, it’s just a difference of what they are posting. Graphics on instagram are being lost in the algorithm, infographics aren’t being pinned like they used to.

People are on social media for completely different reasons than 10-15 years ago. Today about 86% of instagram users are using the platform for pure entertainment, not even engaging in posts they enjoy.

If you want to keep posting faceless content, hoping just one person is interested in what you have to say – okay. But be ready for your workload to increase without seeing a positive impact on your revenue.

I’m not saying having a branding shoot is going to solve all of your revenue issues, but I do know it’ll start to become easier to put yourself out there online, and after you start showing up online then you feel confident to show up in person. After showing up in person your revenue will likely start to self generate.

So what are the pros and cons of doing it yourself? As transparent as possible…this is not something I would DIY (really – I don’t even want to do it myself. It feels way worse than having someone do it for me). If you don’t mind messing with the tripod and having to stop and go check your photos then get right back into position then maybe a DIY branding shoot is for you. But for most people, it’s certainly worth paying someone else to play with all the “boring” aspects of a shoot so you can focus on what really matters – looking like you enjoy what you do.

The biggest pro is that you are doing it yourself, you are in full control. With that said, for my clients you are the boss, but not every photographer will run their sessions like that. If I were the client, I would want to be in full control of my photos because I know what I am picturing, if that’s you and do not want to risk it with a photographer than doing it yourself works well. The caveat to that is you have to make all the decisions, you have to edit, you have to have enough understanding of what makes a good branding photo because social media is different from putting a photo in a frame and hanging it in your living room.
